Camp Thomas - Grand Junction
On the Western slope word has been recieved that after years of waiting, we of the Colorado SCV now have a camp in Grand Junction. In a couple of months, Camp Charles S. Thomas will be our 4th Camp in Colorado.
Camp Thomas was named after the 11th governor of Colorado. Gov. Thomas was a true rebel before entering the arena of politics. He was Georgia born and bred and fought for her during the Second War of Independence. After the war, he went to Michigan studying law and graduating in 1871. Soon after graduation he departed for Colorado for health reasons.
In 1875, he became Denver's City Attorney for two years. Afterwards he returned to private practice till 1884, where he was invited to serve on the Democratic National Committee. Having served for 12 years his political friends had very high regard for him, Democrates and Republicans alike.
In the 1898 elections, it brought Thomas to the governorship of the state and some labled him as the Fusion Candidate because of his litigations with the mines of Colorado.
Between the years of 1913 - 1921, he became a United States Senator and was the special councel to the Korean Commission, to secure the independence of Korea.
Finally on June 24, 1934, he died in his adopted state of Colorado and the city that gave him his start Denver. He is buried at the Fairmont Cemetery in Denver.
